20 Khal JoJo

Khal Jo Jo-20What’s the inspiration behind your name?
Game of Thrones – it’s my life.

What’s the inspiration behind your number?
H2O? The only drink I like is water – I literally drink nothing else. Ever! So H2O Jo came about!

What was your funniest roller derby moment?
Anything involving the words SHOWLDAZ or KNICKAZ (these Geordies don’t half talk funny), or a weekend away for a game. Win or lose, it’s always the best time.

What was your proudest roller derby moment?
Taking the Great Yorkshire Showdown by storm with the Hinnies in September 2015. Straight wins and we got ROSETTES! #WINNAZ. Also hosting Newcastle’s Men’s European Cup with Tyne&Fear – we make seriously good stuff happen up here!!

How did you first discover roller derby / what convinced you to join?
I moved to Newcastle in August 2011. September 3rd there was a bout on (Thwack to the Future), and I dragged my new housemates along to this ‘crazy thing I’d seen online’. Cue 3 years of attending every single home game, repeating the phrase “I wish I could skate!” over & over. Eventually, this was replaced with “just learn, you silly cow!” … and here I am!

What have you learned from roller derby?
Things that are worth having do not come easy. There will always be many things you cannot do, or didn’t win. Embracing what you can do, and will do, and how hard you are working is super-important, and super-hard. And so is taking your own advice!!!

Who are your roller derby heroes?
Sexy Slaydie from Gotham – she’s such an absolute beast! I constantly try and copy her moves – one day I will get them right! She offered to take us skating in Central Park (NYC) and lent us crutches – so she’s a nice gal as well as a blocking beast!

Which team do you look forward to playing the most?
We want a rematch with the Brighton girls – they were rock hard (although we’ll beat’em next time!), brilliant craic and they host the best after-parties!!! #organisedfun
