9 Joanna Bruisin’

Joanna Bruisin'-9What’s the inspiration behind your derby name?
It’s meant to be sort of threatening: “d’you wanna bruising?” but I am not the most intimidating person so it doesn’t always work. I got the idea because there was an America’s Next Top Model contestant called Yoanna House, which my friends and I thought was hilarious.

What’s the inspiration behind your derby number?
Alan Shearer, obvz.

What was your funniest roller derby moment?
I fell on the back of a player I’d accidentally backblocked so it looked like I was riding her like a pony. I couldn’t get off track for laughing.

What was your proudest roller derby moment?
Playing my first game for NRG was a really proud moment. I’d been a fan for years while I played in Yorkshire, and it felt amazing to play for my home team.

How did you first discover roller derby / what convinced you to join?
I went to a roller disco and just kept bugging the guy who ran it to show me tricks. That guy turned out to be Jerry Attrick and he suggested I come along to the roller derby team he was starting – I turned up for the first ever Hot Wheel Roller Derby training session in trousers (!), barely able to skate and not knowing what roller derby was, but I was hooked.

Three words to describe you?
Goofy, hyper, showoff.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get involved with their local team?
Absolutely get involved! NRG are such a friendly, welcoming team, and even if you don’t fancy skating, there are different roles within the league – we love our NSOs and refs too! It’s a great way to meet new people and honestly, the people involved in roller derby are genuinely some of the kindest most hilarious people I’ve ever met. Do it!
